Heltalsrepresentation refers to the way integers are stored and manipulated in computer systems. At its core, it involves converting the mathematical concept of an integer into a binary format that a computer can process. The most common method is using a fixed number of bits, such as 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits, to represent an integer.

The most prevalent scheme for signed integers (positive, negative, and zero) is two's complement. In this system, the most significant bit indicates the sign (0 for positive, 1 for negative). For positive numbers, the representation is straightforward binary. For negative numbers, it involves inverting all the bits of the positive equivalent and then adding one. This method simplifies arithmetic operations, particularly subtraction, which can be performed as addition.

Unsigned integers, on the other hand, use all bits to represent magnitude, allowing for a larger range of positive values. For example, an 8-bit unsigned integer can represent values from 0 to 255, while an 8-bit signed integer (using two's complement) typically represents values from -128 to 127.

Different programming languages and architectures may offer various integer types (e.g., `int`, `long`, `short`) that correspond to different bit widths and thus different ranges of representable values.
