Hatvanas

Hatvanas is a Hungarian term used to denote people born in the 1960s, specifically between 1960 and 1969. In Hungarian usage, hatvanas can function as a noun (for example, egy hatvanas) or as an attributive descriptor referring to the generation. It is common in sociological writing and public discourse and is analogous to terms like “the sixties generation” in English.

The hatvanas cohort grew up under the late socialist regime in Hungary, with childhood in the 1960s and 1970s and adolescence or early adulthood in the 1980s. They experienced state schooling and cultural life shaped by the Kádár era, followed by major political and economic changes during the transition to democracy and market economy in the late 1980s and 1990s. As a result, many hatvanas have lived through a blend of late socialist and post-socialist environments, shaping their attitudes and life trajectories.
