Hattian

Hattian refers to the indigenous people and culture of the land of Hatti, located in ancient Anatolia. The Hattian civilization predates the arrival of the Hittites in the region and flourished from approximately 2500 to 1700 BCE. While distinct from the later Indo-European Hittites, there was significant cultural and linguistic interaction between the two groups.

The Hattian language is considered a linguistic isolate, unrelated to the Indo-European Hittite language or other known language families. Despite this, the Hittites adopted many elements of Hattian culture, including religious practices, mythology, and artistic motifs. Hattian deities were incorporated into the Hittite pantheon, and Hattian place names were retained. Archaeological evidence from sites like Hattusa, the Hittite capital, reveals Hattian influence in pottery, seals, and architectural styles. The exact origins and extent of Hattian civilization are still subjects of scholarly debate, but their presence laid a crucial foundation for the subsequent Hittite Empire.
