Hartsfield

Hartsfield is a surname and place name of English origin. The name has been borne by several individuals, most notably William Berry Hartsfield (1890–1971), an American politician who served as the longtime mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, where he oversaw major modernization and expansion of the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The most prominent non-person use of the name is in Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the primary international airport serving Atlanta and a major hub in U.S. air travel. Opened in 1926 as Candler Field, it later carried names reflecting its civic leadership. It was renamed to honor William B. Hartsfield and Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson, and in 1986 the combined name Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport was adopted. The airport is a major base for Delta Air Lines and ranks among the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic.
