Happoemästeorioita refers to theories concerning acids and bases. Historically, understanding and defining acids and bases has evolved through several key stages, leading to distinct theoretical frameworks.

The earliest and simplest definition, known as the Arrhenius theory, describes acids as substances that produce hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water, and bases as substances that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) in water. While foundational, this theory is limited as it only applies to aqueous solutions and doesn't account for substances that exhibit acidic or basic properties in non-aqueous environments or without direct H+ or OH- production.

The Brønsted-Lowry theory offers a broader perspective by defining acids as proton (H+) donors and bases as proton acceptors. This definition is more versatile, encompassing a wider range of reactions and substances, including those in non-aqueous solvents. In this framework, an acid-base reaction involves the transfer of a proton from an acid to a base.

The most comprehensive theory is the Lewis theory, which defines acids as electron-pair acceptors and bases as electron-pair donors. This theory is the most general, as it includes reactions that do not involve protons at all. For instance, the reaction between ammonia (a Lewis base) and boron trifluoride (a Lewis acid) forms a coordinate covalent bond, a process explained by the Lewis theory but not by the Arrhenius or Brønsted-Lowry theories. Each theory builds upon the previous ones, offering increasingly sophisticated explanations for the diverse behaviors of acids and bases.
