Höyrykiertojärjestelmä, often translated as steam circulation system or steam loop, refers to a thermodynamic process used to generate and distribute mechanical energy through the expansion and condensation of steam. This system is a fundamental component of many power generation facilities, particularly thermal power plants and nuclear reactors. The core principle involves heating water to produce high-pressure steam, which then drives a turbine. The rotating turbine is connected to a generator, producing electricity.

After passing through the turbine and performing work, the steam is at a lower pressure and temperature. It then enters a condenser, where it is cooled and returned to its liquid state, typically water. This condensation process creates a vacuum that helps draw more steam through the turbine, increasing efficiency. The condensed water is then pumped back to the boiler to be reheated, completing the cycle. This continuous loop allows for efficient energy conversion.

Variations of the steam circulation system exist, depending on the application and heat source. In fossil fuel power plants, combustion heats water. In nuclear power plants, nuclear fission provides the heat. Geothermal power plants utilize natural underground steam or hot water. The efficiency and design of the steam circulation system are critical for the overall performance and economic viability of power generation. Proper maintenance and control are essential to ensure safety and optimal operation.
