Grasmere

Grasmere is a village and a lake in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. The village lies in the South Lakeland district within the Lake District National Park, about four miles southeast of Ambleside along the A591. The surrounding landscape features fells and valleys characteristic of the region.

The lake Grasmere sits to the north of the village and is a small glacial lake drained by the River Rothay, which flows toward Ambleside and Windermere. The community has a long-standing association with tourism, walking, and the literary figure William Wordsworth.

Grasmere has a notable literary heritage. The poet William Wordsworth lived at Dove Cottage in Grasmere from 1799 to 1808, and the house is now a National Trust property with the adjacent Wordsworth Museum. The parish church, St Oswald’s, contains Wordsworth’s grave in its churchyard.

The village is also linked with Grasmere Gingerbread, a spice-ginger confection first created in 1854 by Sarah Nelson; the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop remains a frequent stop for visitors. Today, Grasmere is a popular destination for walkers and tourists, supported by tea rooms, pubs, and guesthouses.

The local economy is dominated by tourism within the Lake District National Park, with farming and other rural activities contributing to the surrounding area. Grasmere is accessible by road via the A591, with public transport connections to nearby towns and towns within the National Park.
