Granulater

Granulater, also spelled granulater or granulator, is a term used for machines or processes that produce granules from bulk materials. The word encompasses devices that reduce feed material to granule size and systems that promote agglomeration of powders into uniform granules. In many industries the preferred term is granulator, but granulater appears in some catalogs and technical documents, particularly in historical or regional usage.

Most granulaters operate by feeding material into a chamber equipped with rotating blades or rotating discs and fixed cutters; the resulting fragments are passed through a screen that defines the final particle size. Other designs rely on tumbling motion in a pan or drum to produce rounded granules, aided by binding agents or moisture in the case of agglomeration. The selection depends on material properties such as hardness, moisture, flowability, and desired granule size.

Applications of granulaters span several industries. In plastics recycling, plastic granulators shred and size plastic scrap into pellets for reuse. In pharmaceuticals, granulation is a step in tablet manufacture where powders are formed into granules to improve flow and dosage uniformity; although the term granulation refers more to the process itself, equipment used to assist granulation may be called granulators. In agriculture and fertilizer industries, granulators produce controlled-release granules. In food processing, granulators can be used to form uniform cereal, sugar, or salt granules.

Safety and maintenance considerations are important for granulaters. They can generate fine dust and noise, and involve moving blades and belts, so appropriate guards, dust control, and routine maintenance are essential to ensure safe and reliable operation.
