Glükoonhapet

Glükoonhapet, also known as glucuronic acid, is a type of uronic acid. It is a vital component in the body's detoxification processes and is also involved in the synthesis of many important biological molecules. Glükoonhapet is formed in the liver from glucose.

The primary role of glükoonhapet in the body is in a process called glucuronidation. During glucuronidation, the liver attaches glükoonhapet to various substances, including drugs, toxins, and waste products. This process makes these substances more water-soluble, allowing them to be more easily excreted from the body, typically through urine or bile. This is a crucial mechanism for eliminating harmful compounds.

It is a key component of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are essential structural components of connective tissues, cartilage, and extracellular matrix. Glükoonhapet is also found in some plant gums and mucilages.
