The mesoderm, situated between the ectoderm and endoderm, develops into muscles, bones, connective tissues, and the circulatory system. The endoderm, the innermost layer, forms the lining of the digestive tract, respiratory system, and various internal organs like the liver and pancreas.

The arrangement and fate of these germ layers are conserved across many animal species, reflecting a common evolutionary ancestry. The precise mechanisms by which these layers form and differentiate are complex, involving intricate gene regulation and cell-to-cell signaling. In some simpler organisms, fewer germ layers may be present, or the germ layer concept may not apply in the same way.
