Geostationaarne is a term derived from Greek words meaning "earth" and "standing still". In the context of orbital mechanics, a geostationary orbit is a specific type of geosynchronous orbit directly above Earth's equator. Satellites in a geostationary orbit have an orbital period that matches Earth's rotational period. This means that a satellite in this orbit appears stationary relative to a fixed point on Earth's surface.

For an orbit to be geostationary, it must have a zero inclination and a semi-major axis of approximately 42,164 kilometers (26,199 miles) from Earth's center. This specific altitude above the equator is about 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles). The orbital velocity required for a geostationary orbit is roughly 3.07 kilometers per second.

The primary advantage of a geostationary orbit is that it allows ground-based antennas to remain fixed in one direction, pointing towards the satellite. This simplifies ground station design and operation significantly. Geostationary orbits are commonly used for telecommunications satellites, broadcasting satellites, and weather satellites. These satellites provide continuous coverage of a specific geographic region.

However, geostationary orbits are also congested, leading to challenges in managing orbital space and avoiding collisions. Additionally, satellites in geostationary orbit experience a slight time delay in communication due to the distance the signal must travel. Despite these limitations, the geostationary orbit remains a crucial component of modern satellite technology.
