Genotyyppejä refers to the genetic makeup of an organism. It is the complete set of genes that an individual possesses, inherited from its parents. This genetic information is encoded in DNA, which is organized into chromosomes. The specific sequence of DNA bases within these genes determines the traits an organism will exhibit. Genotypes can be thought of as the blueprint for an organism's development and characteristics, influencing everything from physical appearance to susceptibility to certain diseases.

In simpler terms, if an organism's phenotype is what we can observe, like eye color or height, its genotype is the underlying genetic code that causes those observable traits. For many genes, there are different versions called alleles. An individual inherits two alleles for each gene, one from each parent. The combination of these alleles forms the genotype for that specific gene. For example, if an allele for brown eyes is represented by 'B' and an allele for blue eyes by 'b', a person's genotype for eye color could be BB, Bb, or bb. These different genotypes can lead to different phenotypes. Understanding genotypes is fundamental to genetics and plays a crucial role in fields such as heredity, evolution, and personalized medicine.
