Gallaecic

Gallaecic is a term that refers to the historical region and people known as Gallaecia. This area encompassed much of what is now northwestern Spain and northern Portugal. The Gallaeci were a Celtic people who inhabited this region from the Iron Age until the Roman conquest. Their culture was influenced by Celtic traditions, with evidence of their language and social structures found in archaeological remains and early historical accounts.

The Roman Empire conquered Gallaecia in the 2nd century BCE. Under Roman rule, the region became a significant province, contributing resources and manpower to the empire. Romanization brought changes in administration, infrastructure, and language, though distinct local identities persisted. Following the decline of the Roman Empire, Gallaecia experienced invasions by Germanic tribes, including the Suebi, who established a kingdom in the 5th century CE. This Suebic Kingdom of Gallaecia was one of the earliest barbarian kingdoms to emerge within the former Western Roman Empire.

Later, the region fell under Visigothic control and subsequently became part of the Kingdom of Asturias. The historical and cultural legacy of Gallaecia is still evident in the modern languages of Galician and Portuguese, which share a common ancestor in the Gallaeco-Portuguese language. The term "Gallaecic" can therefore refer to the ancient people, the geographical area, or aspects of their historical culture and linguistic heritage.
