GETS

Gets is the third-person singular present tense of the verb get, used to indicate obtaining, receiving, or achieving something. It also appears as the name of several programming constructs that handle input.

In C, gets is a standard library function that reads a line from standard input into a character array until a newline or EOF is encountered. It does not perform any bounds checking on the destination buffer, which can lead to buffer overflows and security vulnerabilities. Because of these risks, gets was deprecated in later C standards and removed from the C11 standard; programmers are advised to use fgets with a specified maximum length.

In Ruby, gets is a Kernel method that reads a line from standard input and returns it as a string, including the trailing newline. On end-of-file it returns nil.

In Perl, gets reads a line from the currently selected filehandle (defaulting to STDIN) and returns it with a trailing newline; it returns undef on end-of-file or error. It can be redirected or localized using various input-related operators.

In grammar, gets is the present tense form of get used with third-person singular subjects, as in “She gets the message.” It can appear in everyday speech to indicate obtaining something or experiencing a change in state.
