Fundargerð

Fundargerð is the official written record of the proceedings of a meeting in Iceland. It is used by municipalities, boards, committees, and other organized bodies to document what occurred during a gathering, including who attended, what was discussed, and what decisions were made. The term translates to “minutes of the meeting” or “record of proceedings.”

A fundargerð typically includes essential details such as the date, time, and place of the meeting; a list of attendees and apologies; the approved agenda; notes on discussions; motions presented; votes and outcomes; assignments of follow-up tasks with responsible individuals and deadlines; and the date of the next meeting. It may also record official rulings, abstentions, and any resolved or unresolved items.

Preparation and approval are central to its reliability. A secretary or designated note-taker prepares a draft during or shortly after the meeting. The draft is circulated to members for review and is usually approved or amended at a subsequent meeting, after which it is signed by the chair and sometimes the secretary.

Purpose and use are primarily accountability and transparency. The fundargerð serves as a reference for decisions, informs individuals who were absent, guides implementation of resolutions, and supports audits and public records. In many contexts, minutes from public bodies are subject to access under public records or freedom of information laws and are retained according to policy or legal requirements.
