Fræna

Fræna was a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, located in the Nordmøre region along the coast of the Romsdal peninsula. The administrative centre was the village of Elnesvågen. The municipality was named after the Fræna farm in the area.

Fræna was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 under the formannskapsdistrikt law. It encompassed coastal villages and inland rural areas, with a landscape of fjords, hills and farms. The local economy traditionally combined agriculture, small-scale industry, and service sectors, with activity concentrated around Elnesvågen and surrounding communities.

Government and services were organized through a municipal council elected by residents. The council handled local matters such as primary education, health and care services, road infrastructure, zoning, and cultural affairs, under the supervision of the county and state authorities.

On 1 January 2020, Fræna was merged with neighboring Eide Municipality to form the new Hustadvika Municipality as part of a nationwide municipal reform. The name Hustadvika derives from the nearby Hustadvika coast, a characteristic maritime landscape in the area.

Since 2020, Fræna no longer exists as an independent municipality; it forms part of Hustadvika. See also: Hustadvika municipality.
