Fotosynteesiyksiköitä, often translated as photosynthetic units, are the functional complexes within photosynthetic organisms responsible for capturing light energy and converting it into chemical energy. These units are primarily located in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts in eukaryotes and in the plasma membrane of cyanobacteria. Each photosynthetic unit consists of a reaction center and an array of antenna pigments.

The antenna pigments, such as chlorophylls and carotenoids, form a light-harvesting complex. They absorb photons of light and transfer the energy through a process called resonance energy transfer to the reaction center. This energy transfer is highly efficient, ensuring that most of the absorbed light energy is funneled to the reaction center without significant loss.

The reaction center is the core of the photosynthetic unit. It contains specialized chlorophyll molecules that, upon receiving the excitation energy, become capable of initiating the photochemical reactions. In oxygenic photosynthesis, there are two main types of reaction centers, Photosystem II (PSII) and Photosystem I (PSI). PSII uses light energy to split water molecules, releasing oxygen, protons, and electrons. PSI uses light energy to reduce NADP+ to NADPH. These processes are coupled through an electron transport chain, which also generates a proton gradient used to synthesize ATP.

The precise composition and arrangement of proteins and pigments within a photosynthetic unit are crucial for its function and efficiency. The number of antenna pigments per reaction center can vary, influencing the overall light-harvesting capacity of the organism. Studying photosynthetic units helps us understand the fundamental mechanisms of photosynthesis, which underpins most life on Earth.
