There are two main types of photoluminescence: fluorescence and phosphorescence. Fluorescence occurs when the re-emission of light happens very rapidly, typically within nanoseconds after excitation. Once the excitation source is removed, the fluorescence ceases almost immediately. Phosphorescence, on the other hand, involves a slower re-emission of light. In phosphorescent materials, excited electrons can become trapped in metastable states, leading to a delayed emission of light that can persist for seconds, minutes, or even hours after the excitation source is removed. This lingering glow is characteristic of phosphorescence.
