Fosfaadirühma refers to a group of chemical compounds containing the phosphate ion (PO4^3-). In a broader sense, it can also refer to organic phosphate compounds where phosphate is esterified to an alcohol. Phosphates are essential for life, playing critical roles in biological systems. For example, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the primary energy currency of cells and is a type of organic phosphate. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), the carriers of genetic information, also have phosphate groups in their sugar-phosphate backbone.

The phosphate cycle is a biogeochemical cycle that describes the movement of phosphorus through the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient in many ecosystems, meaning its availability can control the rate of primary production. Eutrophication, the excessive enrichment of water bodies with nutrients like phosphates and nitrates, can lead to algal blooms and oxygen depletion, harming aquatic life. In industrial chemistry, various phosphate salts are used for their buffering, sequestering, and emulsifying properties.
