Forsterkningsgrad

Forsterkningsgrad, or degree of amplification, is a term used in several fields to describe how much a quantity is increased relative to a reference level. It is usually expressed as a ratio or, when using a logarithmic scale, in decibels. The precise definition depends on the domain, the quantity measured, and the measurement setup.

In electronics and signal processing, forsterkningsgrad denotes the gain of a system: the ratio of output to input. For voltage gain it is Av = Vout/Vin; for power gain it is Ap = Pout/Pin. When written in decibels, gain is 10 log10(Pout/Pin) for power or 20 log10(Vout/Vin) for voltage, assuming appropriate source and load impedances.

In imaging, forsterkningsgrad describes how much a region enhances after contrast administration, affecting visibility on CT or MRI. In acoustics, it refers to amplification of sound pressure or intensity by an amplifier or medium.

In materials science, it can refer to the strengthening effect of a treatment, coating, or additive, expressed as the relative increase in stiffness, strength, or another property compared with an untreated sample.

Interpretation requires specifying the measured quantity, the reference, the units, and the conditions under which the measurement is made. Because it is context-dependent, researchers typically define the exact meaning of forsterkningsgrad in their reports to avoid ambiguity.
