Follikkelikanalan
Follikkelikanalan, also known as the follicular canal or hair canal, refers to the channel within the skin from which a hair grows. This structure is an invagination of the epidermis, extending down into the dermis. The canal is lined by stratified squamous epithelium, which is continuous with the epidermis at the surface of the skin. Within the follicular canal, the cells of the hair follicle undergo proliferation and differentiation to form the hair shaft and the inner root sheath. The outer root sheath, which is a downward extension of the epidermis, surrounds the inner root sheath and the developing hair. Sebaceous glands typically open into the upper portion of the follicular canal, secreting sebum to lubricate the hair and skin. The arrector pili muscle, a small muscle attached to the side of the hair follicle, also connects to the follicular canal, causing the hair to stand on end when it contracts. The health and function of the follicular canal are crucial for normal hair growth and can be affected by various dermatological conditions.
