Fensterrand

Fensterrand is a small town in the fictional Nordmark region. Its name derives from the German words fenster (window) and rand (edge), a reference to its historic glassmaking quarter and the light-filled streets that define its town center.

The town sits along the Silberbach river at the foot of the Hohenwald hills, at an elevation of roughly 180 to 350 meters. The compact historic core sits beside a newer industrial quarter, with a temperate climate and frequent winter fog.

Fensterrand was founded in the 12th century by glassmakers who settled here for silica sand and timber. The medieval guild system supported skilled glass production; the industry shaped the town into a center of craft, trade, and urban renewal after floods and fires.

Today, glassmaking remains a core activity, but the economy has diversified to include artisan studios, tourism, and small light manufacturing. Visitors come to watch glassblowing demonstrations, buy locally produced wares, and explore the surrounding vineyards and trails.

The town preserves half-timbered houses, a hilltop church, and the Fensterrand Glassworks, which runs a small museum and workshop. The annual Fensterfest festival celebrates light and glass with lantern parades and art installations.

As of a recent census, Fensterrand has about 2,500 residents, predominantly German-speaking. It is governed by a municipal council led by a mayor and satellite districts represented in the regional assembly.

Fensterrand is served by a regional rail line and a network of local roads. Education includes Fensterrand Primary School and Fensterrand Secondary School, with a public library and community center in the town hall complex.
