Felszabadítás

Felszabadítás is a Hungarian term that translates to "liberation" or "emancipation" in English. It carries significant historical and political connotations within Hungary, often referring to periods of liberation from foreign occupation or oppressive regimes.

The most prominent usage of Felszabadítás relates to the end of World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation of Hungary. The Red Army's advance into Hungary and the defeat of Nazi Germany were widely perceived and officially proclaimed as a "liberation" from Nazi and Horthyist rule. This narrative was central to the post-war Hungarian political landscape, underpinning the legitimacy of the new communist government.

However, the term's meaning evolved and became contested. For many, the Soviet "liberation" marked the beginning of a new form of subjugation, leading to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, which sought genuine national independence and freedom from Soviet influence. The revolutionaries' aims were a true "felszabadítás" in their eyes, free from external control.
