Faseandringer, also known as phase transitions, are phenomena where a substance changes from one state of matter to another. The most common examples involve solid, liquid, and gas phases. These transitions occur at specific temperatures and pressures for a given substance. For instance, water undergoes a phase change from solid ice to liquid water at its melting point, 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure. Conversely, it freezes back into ice at the same temperature.

Another well-known phase change is boiling, where a liquid transforms into a gas. For water, this occurs at its boiling point, 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard pressure. This process is also reversible; the gas can condense back into a liquid. Beyond these common transitions, there are other types of phase changes. Sublimation is the direct transition from solid to gas, bypassing the liquid phase, as seen with dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). Deposition is the reverse process, where a gas directly forms a solid.

Phase changes are driven by changes in the internal energy of the substance. When energy is added, molecules gain kinetic energy, allowing them to overcome intermolecular forces and transition to a less ordered state. Conversely, removing energy allows molecules to settle into more ordered arrangements. These transitions are fundamental in many scientific and engineering applications, from weather patterns to industrial processes.
