Faasinvaihdot

Faasinvaihdot, in Finnish, refers to phase transitions. This is a physical process where a substance changes from one state of matter to another, such as from solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or vice versa. The most common examples include melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling or evaporation (liquid to gas), and condensation (gas to liquid). Sublimation, the direct transition from solid to gas, and deposition, the direct transition from gas to solid, are also types of phase transitions.

These transitions occur at specific temperatures and pressures, known as critical points or phase boundaries. For instance, water melts at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure. During a phase transition, the temperature of the substance often remains constant even as heat is added or removed. This energy is used to break or form the intermolecular bonds characteristic of each phase.

Phase transitions are fundamental concepts in thermodynamics and have wide-ranging applications, from industrial processes like distillation and refrigeration to natural phenomena like the water cycle and the formation of clouds.
