Faasaleleaga

Faasaleleaga is a political district of Samoa, located on the eastern portion of Savai'i, the country's largest island. It is one of the 11 administrative districts that make up Samoa's territorial divisions. The town of Salelologa, which serves as the main ferry port for the island and a commercial hub, lies within the district.

Faasaleleaga comprises numerous villages arranged along Savai'i's coast and inland valleys. Local governance is based on the Samoan matai system, with village councils and district authorities coordinating under customary and national law. The district's economy is predominantly rural, anchored in subsistence and cash crop agriculture, fishing, and small-scale commerce. Remittances from overseas Samoan communities are an important supplementary income source for many households. Tourism is modest but growing in parts of the district, particularly around coastal areas and natural attractions on Savai'i.

Demographically, Faasaleleaga is predominantly ethnic Samoan; villages are organized around family lineages and chiefly titles. The district forms part of Samoa's cultural and political fabric, contributing to regional governance through district and national institutions. In recent decades, development efforts have focused on improving infrastructure, rural services, and access to markets for local producers, while preserving traditional practices and community life within the matai-based system.
