FY4B

FY4B is a geostationary meteorological satellite developed by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). It is the second satellite in the Fengyun-4 series, succeeding FY4A. FY4B was launched on June 3, 2021, aboard a Long March 3B rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. It is positioned at 105 degrees East longitude above the equator.

The primary mission of FY4B is to provide advanced Earth observation data for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, disaster prevention, and environmental protection. It carries a suite of sophisticated instruments, including a geostationary interferometric sounder (GIIS), a geostationary atmospheric sounder (GAS), and a geostationary multi-spectral imager (GMI). These instruments enable FY4B to collect high-resolution imagery and atmospheric profile data, including temperature, humidity, and wind information. The satellite also has a lightning mapping imager (LMI) to detect and track lightning activity.

FY4B's advanced capabilities allow for more accurate and timely weather predictions, improved monitoring of severe weather events, and a better understanding of atmospheric dynamics. Its data is used by meteorological agencies worldwide to enhance their forecasting models and provide critical information for various applications. The Fengyun program is a key component of China's space-based Earth observation infrastructure, contributing significantly to global meteorological research and operational services.
