Földrengésfigyelmeztet is a Hungarian term that translates to "Earthquake Warning" or "Seismic Alert." It refers to a system or process designed to detect and notify people about impending or ongoing earthquakes. The primary goal of such a system is to reduce casualties and damage by providing advance notice, even if it's only a few seconds or minutes.

The technology behind earthquake warning systems typically involves a network of seismometers placed strategically to detect the initial seismic waves generated by an earthquake. These waves travel at different speeds. The faster, P-waves (primary waves) are detected first. By analyzing the arrival times of these P-waves at various locations, the system can estimate the earthquake's epicenter, magnitude, and potential intensity at different areas.

Once these parameters are determined, the system can rapidly transmit alerts to predefined regions. The lead time of these warnings depends on the distance from the earthquake's epicenter. Locations closer to the epicenter will receive very little or no warning, while those further away might have precious seconds to minutes.

Potential actions taken upon receiving an earthquake warning include dropping, covering, and holding on; evacuating buildings; stopping trains; shutting down critical infrastructure like gas lines or nuclear power plants; and alerting emergency services.
