FèsMeknès

Fès-Meknès, also spelled Fez-Meknès, is an administrative region of Morocco created in 2015 during the territorial reform that merged the former regions of Fès-Boulemane and Meknès-Tafilalet. The regional capital is Fez. Located in the northern central part of the country, the region covers a varied landscape that includes the medinas and historic sites of Fez and Meknès, as well as rural plains and portions of the Middle Atlas.

Heritage and culture: Fez el-Bali, the old medina of Fez, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the Historic City of Meknès, and the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis with the sacred town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. The region is known for traditional crafts, leatherwork, textiles, and a rich architectural heritage.

Economy: The economy combines crafts and manufacturing in Fez with agriculture in the surrounding plains, including cereals, olives, and vineyards near Meknès. Tourism is significant due to imperial cities, ancient markets, and archaeological sites.

Administration: The region is subdivided into several provinces and prefectures, including the urban centers of Fez and Meknès and surrounding rural areas. It remains one of Morocco’s 12 regions used for local governance and development planning.

Transport and infrastructure: Fez serves as a major rail and road hub in the region, with an international airport and connections to other parts of the country.
