Fällprodukter

Fällprodukter, also known as tanning agents or tanning extracts, are substances used in the leather industry to convert raw hides into leather. These products are typically derived from natural sources such as oak bark, chestnut bark, or quebracho wood. The primary function of fällprodukter is to precipitate the collagen fibers in the hide, causing them to coagulate and form a stable, durable leather structure.

The tanning process involves several stages. Initially, the raw hide is soaked in a solution containing fällprodukter. This step, known as felling, causes the collagen fibers to swell and become more soluble. The next stage, called fixation, involves the addition of a second tanning agent, such as chromium sulfate, which binds to the collagen fibers and forms a cross-linked network. This network provides the leather with its characteristic strength, flexibility, and resistance to water and microorganisms.

The choice of fällprodukter and the specific tanning process can significantly impact the final properties of the leather. For example, different types of fällprodukter can result in varying degrees of leather softness, durability, and resistance to abrasion.
