Exohidroláz

Exohidroláz is a type of enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of a substrate at or near the end of a polymer chain. These enzymes are distinct from endohydrolases, which cleave bonds within the polymer chain. Exohidrolases typically release monomers or short oligomers from the terminus of the polymer. Their activity is crucial in various biological processes, including the degradation of polysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids.

The classification of exohidrolases is based on the type of bond they cleave. For example, exoglycosidases hydrolyze glycosidic bonds at the non-reducing end of oligosaccharides or polysaccharides, releasing monosaccharides. Exopeptidases, on the other hand, hydrolyze peptide bonds at either the N-terminus or C-terminus of a polypeptide chain, releasing amino acids. Exonucleases degrade nucleic acids by removing nucleotides from the 5' or 3' end.

These enzymes play vital roles in metabolism, nutrient acquisition, and cellular remodeling. For instance, exoglycosidases are important for the breakdown of dietary carbohydrates.
