It is a measure of how common something is. In medical contexts, prevalence is often expressed as a percentage or a rate per number of individuals, such as cases per 100,000 people. This metric is crucial for public health planning, resource allocation, and understanding the burden of diseases.

There are two main types of prevalence: point prevalence and period prevalence. Point prevalence measures the proportion of a population that has a condition at a single specific moment in time. Period prevalence, on the other hand, measures the proportion of the population that has had the condition at any time during a defined interval, such as a year.
