Erdhalbkugeln

Erdhalbkugeln, which translates to hemispheres in English, refers to the division of the Earth into two halves. This division is typically made by the equator, an imaginary line that circles the Earth at 0 degrees latitude, dividing it into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere includes all the landmasses and oceans north of the equator, while the Southern Hemisphere includes those south of it.

Another significant division is made by the prime meridian, the line of 0 degrees longitude, which runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. This divides the Earth into the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. The Eastern Hemisphere lies to the east of the prime meridian, and the Western Hemisphere lies to the west. These hemispheres are also defined by the International Date Line, which largely follows the 180-degree longitude line.

The concept of hemispheres is fundamental to geography and cartography, aiding in the localization of places and the understanding of global climate patterns and seasonal variations. For instance, when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa, due to the Earth's axial tilt relative to its orbital plane around the sun. The distribution of continents, oceans, and population also differs significantly between these halves of the planet.
