Equivación

Equivación is a term that refers to the act or instance of using a word or phrase in a way that suggests more than one possible meaning. This can be intentional, as in wordplay or humor, or unintentional, leading to misunderstanding. The ambiguity arises from the multiple semantic interpretations a word or phrase can possess.

In linguistics, equivación is related to the concept of polysemy, where a single word has multiple related meanings, and homonymy, where words are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings. When equivación occurs, the listener or reader must infer the intended meaning based on context.

Rhetorically, equivación can be employed for stylistic effect. For example, a writer might use a double entendre to add a layer of sophistication or wit to their work.
