Epifysaire
Epifysaire refers to something relating to or located near an epiphysis. The epiphysis, plural epiphyses, is the expanded end of a long bone. In growing individuals, the epiphyses are covered with articular cartilage and are separated from the shaft of the bone, the diaphysis, by a layer of hyaline cartilage called the epiphyseal plate. This epiphyseal plate is crucial for longitudinal bone growth. As a person matures, the epiphyseal plates ossify, meaning they turn into bone, and the epiphysis fuses with the diaphysis, marking the cessation of bone lengthening. Conditions or phenomena described as epifysaire would therefore pertain to these specific regions of the bone, particularly during periods of growth or in relation to pathologies affecting these areas. For example, epifysaire osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone that occurs in the epiphyseal region. Similarly, epifysaire fractures are breaks that occur in the epiphysis, which can have significant implications for growth if the epiphyseal plate is involved.
