Ephemeralschlüsselaustausch, also known as ephemeral key exchange, refers to cryptographic protocols designed to establish a shared secret key for a single communication session. Unlike traditional key exchange methods that might result in long-term keys, ephemeral keys are intended to be used for a limited time and then discarded. This temporary nature provides enhanced security against certain types of attacks, particularly those that might compromise a long-term key and retroactively decrypt past communications.

The core principle of an ephemeral key exchange is that each new session generates a new, unique key. This means that even if an attacker were to capture the communication and later obtain the secret key, they would only be able to decrypt that specific session's data. The security relies on the fact that the keys are not reused. Common examples of algorithms that can be used for ephemeral key exchange include variations of the Diffie-Hellman protocol, such as the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) ephemeral mode.

The advantage of ephemeral key exchange lies in its forward secrecy. Forward secrecy ensures that the compromise of a long-term secret key does not compromise past session keys. This is a critical security feature in modern communication systems, protecting sensitive data even if an adversary manages to obtain long-term cryptographic material. The ephemeral nature of the keys means that the session keys are derived without relying on any pre-existing long-term keys that could be compromised.
