Epätäydellisyysteoreema

Epätäydellisyysteoreema, also known as the incompleteness theorem, is a fundamental result in mathematical logic and the philosophy of mathematics, formulated by Austrian logician Kurt Gödel in 1931. The theorem demonstrates that in any consistent formal system that is powerful enough to express basic arithmetic, there exist true statements that cannot be proven within the system. This means that no such system can be both consistent (free of contradictions) and complete (capable of proving all true statements).

Gödel's proof involves constructing a specific statement, known as Gödel's sentence, which asserts its own unprovability. If the system can prove the sentence, then it is false (since it asserts its own unprovability), leading to a contradiction. Conversely, if the system cannot prove the sentence, then it is true, but this also leads to a contradiction because the system should be able to prove all true statements.

It suggests that any formal system that aims to capture the full extent of mathematical truth must necessarily be incomplete, and that there will always be some mathematical truths that lie outside the reach of formal proof.
