Eoabelisaurus

Eoabelisaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Early Jurassic of Patagonia, Argentina. It is considered an early member of Abelisauridae, a family of carnivorous theropods within Ceratosauria. The type species is Eoabelisaurus mefi.

Discovery and material

Fossils attributed to Eoabelisaurus were recovered from the Cañadón Asfalto Formation, which dates to the Early Jurassic. The available material is partial, including skull and postcranial remains, and the genus was named in 2010. The fragmentary nature of the holotype means that the full appearance and exact size of the animal are not known with certainty.

Anatomy and classification

Eoabelisaurus shows a combination of primitive ceratosaurian features and traits associated with later abelisaurids. As one of the earliest known members of Abelisauridae, it provides insight into the early evolution of this lineage. Its anatomy supports the view that abelisaurids originated in Gondwana and began diversifying earlier than previously documented.

Significance

The genus is significant for pushing back the known existence of Abelisauridae into the Early Jurassic, expanding the temporal and geographic range of this group. Its discovery contributes to understanding the early diversification of theropod dinosaurs in southern Gondwana and helps calibrate the evolutionary history of abelisaurids.

Etymology

The name Eoabelisaurus combines the prefix “Eo-” meaning dawn or early with Abelisaurus, reflecting its status as an early member of the Abelisauridae. The species epithet is mefi.
