Energikvaliteet refers to the overall quality of electrical energy supplied to a consumer. It encompasses various parameters that describe how well the electrical supply conforms to the ideal sinusoidal waveform at the specified voltage and frequency. Poor energy quality can lead to malfunctions, reduced efficiency, and premature failure of electrical equipment.

Key aspects of energy quality include voltage stability, frequency stability, and the absence of disturbances like harmonics, sags, swells, and interruptions. Voltage sags, for instance, are temporary reductions in voltage, while swells are temporary increases. Harmonics are unwanted frequencies that distort the pure sinusoidal waveform and can cause overheating and interference. Transients are sudden, short-lived voltage or current spikes.

The causes of poor energy quality are diverse, including issues within the power grid, such as faults or switching operations, and problems within the consumer's installation, such as the operation of non-linear loads like variable speed drives or switching power supplies. Understanding and monitoring energy quality is crucial for utilities to ensure reliable power delivery and for industrial and commercial users to protect their sensitive equipment and maintain efficient operations.
