Endoplasmallisesta is a Finnish term that translates to "endoplasmic reticulum" in English. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a crucial organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It is a network of membranes forming sacs and tubules throughout the cytoplasm of a cell, continuous with the outer nuclear membrane. The ER plays a vital role in protein and lipid synthesis, folding, modification, and transport, as well as calcium storage.

There are two main types of endoplasmic reticulum: the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). The RER is studded with ribosomes on its surface, giving it a "rough" appearance. These ribosomes are responsible for synthesizing proteins that are destined for secretion, insertion into membranes, or delivery to other organelles. The SER, lacking ribosomes, is involved in lipid synthesis, detoxification of drugs and poisons, and storage of calcium ions. The RER and SER are interconnected and can interconvert. The ER's extensive membrane system allows for a large surface area, facilitating its diverse functions within the cell. Its activity is essential for cellular homeostasis and the proper functioning of the organism.
