Embrüote

Embrüote is the Estonian term for embryos, referring to the early developmental stages of organisms after fertilization and before the onset of fetal development. The word is used in biology, medicine, and related legal and ethical discussions to describe multiple individual embryos.

Biology and development

An embryo begins as a fertilized egg (zygote) that undergoes rapid cell division, forming a morula and then a blastocyst. After implantation in the uterus, the embryo enters the early phases of organ and tissue formation, a period known as embryogenesis. In humans, the embryonic period typically extends from fertilization through the eighth week of gestation, after which development is described as fetal. Key processes include gastrulation, body-plan formation, and the beginnings of organ development.

Medical and research context

Embrüote are central to assisted reproductive technologies, most commonly in vitro fertilization (IVF). Embryos created in the lab may be implanted to achieve pregnancy or stored for future use.
