Eläkemärkintä, which translates to "pension marking" or "pension notation," is a term used in Finnish pension systems. It refers to the process of recording and verifying pension entitlements earned by an individual throughout their working life. This information is crucial for calculating the final pension benefit upon retirement.

The Finnish social security system, managed by Kela, and various pension providers, such as Ilmarinen, Elo, and Varma, maintain these records. When an individual accumulates pension contributions from different employers or periods of employment, these are all noted. This includes earnings from employment, self-employment, and periods of recognized social security coverage, such as parental leave or unemployment.

Theeläkemärkintä ensures that all earned pension rights are accurately accounted for. This system allows for portability of pension rights, meaning that if an individual changes employers or works in different sectors, their pension accrual continues to be tracked and combined. Upon reaching the statutory retirement age, or if eligible for early retirement, the accumulatedeläkemärkintä data is used by the relevant pension provider to calculate the exact pension amount.
