ElixhauserScores
Elixhauser Scores refer to a suite of comorbidity indicators used to quantify a patient’s burden of disease in administrative data. Developed by Anne Elixhauser and colleagues in 1998, the original set consists of 30 binary comorbidity indicators derived from International Classification of Diseases (ICD) diagnosis codes found in hospital records. The core concept of the Elixhauser approach is that each comorbidity category is coded as present or
One widely used variant is the van Walraven modification, which assigns weights to the 30 comorbidity indicators
Applications of Elixhauser Scores include risk adjustment in observational studies, benchmarking, and health services research using
