Elektrokémiai

Elektrokémia is a branch of physical chemistry that deals with the relationship between electrical potential and chemical composition of a system. It is concerned with the study of chemical reactions that involve the transfer of electrons, known as redox reactions. The field is fundamental to understanding and developing technologies such as batteries, fuel cells, and electrolysis.

In an electrochemical cell, chemical energy is converted into electrical energy through redox reactions. The cell consists of two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, separated by an electrolyte. At the anode, oxidation occurs, releasing electrons that flow through an external circuit to the cathode, where reduction takes place. The potential difference between the two electrodes drives the flow of electrons, generating an electric current.

Electrochemical cells can be classified as galvanic (or voltaic) cells, which produce electrical energy spontaneously, and electrolytic cells, which require an external electrical source to drive non-spontaneous reactions. Galvanic cells are used in batteries and fuel cells, while electrolytic cells are employed in processes such as electroplating and the production of chemicals like chlorine and hydrogen.

The Nernst equation is a fundamental concept in elektrokémia, describing the relationship between the cell potential, temperature, and the activities or concentrations of the reactants and products. It allows for the calculation of the equilibrium potential of a cell and the prediction of the direction of spontaneous reactions.

Applications of elektrokémia are vast and include energy storage and conversion, corrosion prevention, and the development of sensors and analytical techniques. The field continues to evolve, driven by the need for more efficient and sustainable energy solutions and advancements in materials science.
