Eläkekarttuma

Eläkekarttuma refers to the accumulation of pension rights in the Finnish earnings-related pension system. It is a core concept in understanding how pensions are calculated and earned throughout a person's working life.

When an individual works and earns a salary, a portion of that income is directed towards their pension. This earned pension is then accumulated as a percentage of the individual's pension contribution base, typically up to a certain earnings limit. For those born between 1950 and 1961, the annual accrual rate was 1.5% of their pension contribution base. For those born in 1962 or later, the accrual rate is 1.7% of their pension contribution base.

This accumulated pension right, the eläkekarttuma, forms the basis of the pension that an individual will receive upon retirement. The total accumulated pension is calculated by summing up the accrual from all the years of employment. Various factors can influence the final eläkekarttuma, including the amount of earnings, periods of unemployment, and periods of illness or parental leave, which may also contribute to pension accrual under specific conditions. The earnings-related pension system is designed to ensure that individuals receive a pension that reflects their lifetime earnings and contributions to the workforce.
