Eikuvaalue

Eikuvaalue is a Finnish term used in imaging, printing and graphic design to denote the active region of an image that is intended for capture, display or reproduction. It defines the portion of the image that will be preserved after processing, cropping or trimming and typically excludes margins, bleed areas, or non-printable borders.

In photography and video, the eikuvaalue corresponds to the sensor’s active pixel area or the part of the frame that is intended to be shown in the final image. In displays, it refers to the portion of the screen where the image is reliably displayed, taking into account bezel space and potential overscan. In printing and publishing, the eikuvaalue is the area on the page where the image is guaranteed to appear after trimming; designers plan around this zone to avoid important content being cut off.

Practical use involves specifying measurements in millimeters or pixels, and distinguishing it from related concepts such as bleed, margins, crop marks and safe areas. Content that must remain visible should be placed within the eikuvaalue to avoid clipping during printing, cropping or device scaling. Awareness of the eikuvaalue helps ensure consistent results across devices, formats and finishing processes.
