EcoSolvent

Ecosolvent, or eco-solvent, refers to a solvent system designed to reduce environmental and health impacts compared with traditional petroleum-based solvents. These solvents typically derive from renewable feedstocks, exhibit lower toxicity, reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, and greater biodegradability. They are used in cleaning, paint stripping, degreasing, ink and coating formulations, and adhesives.

Common categories include bio-based solvents such as ethyl lactate, terpenes (e.g., d-limonene), and certain cyclic carbonates and glycol ethers with improved safety profiles. Some eco-solvents are blends that optimize solvency while minimizing odor and skin irritation. Performance varies with solute and substrate; eco-solvents can achieve similar solvating power but may have higher viscosity, different evaporation rates, and material compatibility considerations.

Environmental and regulatory context: Companies assess eco-solvents using life cycle assessment (LCA), biodegradability tests, and VOC regulations. In many regions, eco-solvents are promoted as low-VOC alternatives; some certifications exist, such as green chemistry labels or compliance with REACH, OSHA, and other safety standards.

Limitations: Availability, cost, supply chain variability, and compatibility with coatings and adhesives can limit substitution. Not all eco-solvents meet all performance requirements; complete replacement may require reformulation.
