Dooyeweerd

Herman Dooyeweerd was a Dutch philosopher and jurist. He is best known for developing a unique philosophical system called "Reformational Philosophy" or "C.T.S. philosophy" (Calvinistic philosophical system). Dooyeweerd's work is characterized by its attempt to create a comprehensive worldview grounded in a Calvinistic understanding of reality, particularly the sovereignty of God.

His philosophical approach centers on the idea of distinct modal aspects of reality, which he identified as fifteen irreducible spheres of experience. These include the numerical, spatial, kinematic, energetic, biotic, sensitive, imaginative, intellectual, historical, linguistic, social, economic, aesthetic, juridical, and moral aspects. Dooyeweerd argued that each aspect has its own unique law and modal character, yet they are all interconnected and dependent on a transcendental ground, which he identified as God.

Dooyeweerd's philosophy also emphasizes the concept of "cosmonomic" law, meaning the law of the cosmos. He believed this law is divinely ordained and applies to all aspects of existence. His work has had a significant influence on Christian scholarship in various fields, including theology, law, education, and social sciences, particularly within the Reformed tradition. He also co-founded the Association for Calvinistic Philosophy.
