Donabedianmodel

The Donabedian model, developed by Avedis Donabedian, is a framework used to evaluate the quality of healthcare. It categorizes quality into three interconnected components: structure, process, and outcome.

Structure refers to the context in which care is delivered. This includes the physical facilities, equipment, organizational structure, financing, and the qualifications of healthcare professionals. For example, a well-equipped hospital with adequately trained staff represents good structure.

Process encompasses the actual delivery of care. It involves the interactions between patients and healthcare providers, the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed, and the adherence to established medical guidelines. Examples include performing a correct diagnosis, administering appropriate medication, or providing patient education.

Outcome represents the effects of healthcare on the health status of patients and populations. This can include changes in health status, patient satisfaction, morbidity, mortality, and the patient's perception of their well-being. For instance, a successful recovery from illness or a reduction in hospital readmission rates are positive outcomes.

Donabedian argued that structure influences process, and process, in turn, influences outcome. By assessing all three components, healthcare organizations can identify areas for improvement and ensure the delivery of high-quality care. The model emphasizes that evaluating quality is a continuous cycle of assessment and improvement.
