Djúpavogshreppur
Djúpavogshreppur was a municipality located in the eastern part of Iceland. It encompassed a significant stretch of coastline along the Berufjörður and Hamarsfjörður fjords, as well as a portion of the interior highlands. The main settlement within the municipality was the village of Djúpivogur, a fishing and service center situated on the southern shore of Búlandshöfn bay. Historically, fishing and agriculture formed the economic backbone of the region, with tourism playing an increasingly important role in recent years. The area is known for its dramatic coastal landscapes, including basalt columns and numerous bird species. Significant geographical features include the Búlandstindur mountain and the scenic fjords that define its eastern edge. The municipality was formed through the merger of several smaller districts and underwent further administrative changes. In 2020, Djúpavogshreppur merged with the municipalities of Breiðdalshreppur and Fáskrúðsfjarðarhreppur to form a new, larger municipality called Austurbyggð.
